Shutter speed, reflections and foreground placement give a file its starting character. Software can refine that character, but it cannot recover every choice that was left unmade.

Start with a comparison you can actually judge
The intended audience is photographers learning deliberate landscape exposure. Expected experience is basic control of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Required equipment is a camera with exposure controls and a stable support for longer exposures. A polarizing filter is optional. A phone with suitable manual controls can support part of the exercise, although computational long-exposure modes may combine frames differently from a single camera exposure.
Find an accessible viewpoint on a dry, stable path or bank. Choose a small area where moving water passes something stationary, such as a rock. That pairing gives the eye a reference. If everything in the frame moves, it becomes harder to separate intentional water blur from camera movement.
Make a frame with a short exposure, then one with a noticeably longer exposure. The principle behind shutter speed is straightforward: the recording interval changes how motion appears. Do not begin with the assumption that the longest exposure is the most accomplished photograph. Distinct droplets, connected strands and a smooth sheet each describe water differently.
Keep framing and focus unchanged while comparing the pair. Adjust the remaining exposure controls as needed to avoid a misleading brightness difference. If the longer frame is much brighter, the comparison becomes partly about exposure rather than movement. Inspect the brightest water and retain detail there where possible.
Give reflections their own test
Next, leave the shutter-speed decision in place and examine the water's surface. A reflection may hide submerged detail, describe the sky or connect the stream to surrounding foliage. Removing it is an expressive decision, not an automatic correction.
If you have a polarizing filter, rotate it while watching the scene and make a comparison at two positions. Its effect depends on geometry and the reflected surface. Look for the change in wet foliage and rocks as well as the water. Check exposure again because adding a filter changes the light reaching the camera.
Without a filter, you can still test reflection through viewpoint. Move only where the ground remains safe and access permits it. A modest change in height or angle can alter the relationship between reflected light and visible water. Record which version better explains the scene, not merely which looks darker or more saturated.
This is where separate comparisons earn their time. Changing shutter speed, filter position, framing and processing all at once may produce an appealing result, but it leaves little explanation of why it works. A small controlled sequence becomes a reference for the next visit.
Let the foreground do a specific job
After the technical comparisons, reconsider the frame. A foreground element should guide attention, establish scale or connect the viewer to the water. A large rock placed near the lens can also block the stream and become the unintended subject.
Try one composition with a nearby element and another with a simpler entrance to the scene. Compare their visual paths. Does the foreground point toward the cascade, echo a curve in the water or create a useful pause? If it does none of those things, removing it may make the photograph more coherent.

Edit to preserve the choice
At the computer, begin with similar adjustments across the comparison frames. Avoid giving one version stronger contrast simply because you already prefer it. Review both at a normal viewing size and at a larger scale, where camera movement and lost highlight detail become easier to notice.
