This first look follows Sigma’s September 8, 2026 launch announcement and independent reviews published that week. I have not yet used the lens.

The Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG | Art is the portrait prime many E-mount and L-Mount photographers expected Sigma to make eventually. The headline specification is obvious, but the more interesting achievement may be how much lens Sigma has fitted into a body that weighs 905 grams.

That still makes it a substantial optic. It is also 280 grams heavier than the Sony E-mount version of Sigma’s existing 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art. Yet an autofocus 85mm f/1.2 has traditionally demanded an even larger commitment in the camera bag. Sigma’s new lens makes that tradeoff less severe without pretending it has disappeared.

What Sigma Has Actually Announced

Sigma’s September 8 launch notice sets a September 30, 2026 availability date for the L-Mount and Sony E-mount versions. Sigma Corporation of America lists a later October 6 United States date and a suggested retail price of $1,599. Regional dates therefore matter.

The official specification is unusually complete for a lens whose appeal will ultimately depend on rendering:

  • 17 elements in 12 groups
  • two SLD elements and three aspherical elements
  • a 13-blade rounded diaphragm
  • an 84-centimeter minimum focusing distance
  • 1:8.9 maximum magnification
  • an 82-millimeter filter thread
  • 87.2-millimeter diameter and 119.7-millimeter L-Mount length
  • 905-gram weight for both announced mounts

Sigma also includes two assignable AFL buttons, an aperture ring with click and lock controls, a dust- and splash-resistant structure, and a water- and oil-repellent front coating. Autofocus uses two High-response Linear Actuators around a floating focus arrangement. Sigma says that design supports fast, quiet tracking and reduces focus breathing for video.

Those are manufacturer claims until they are tested across different bodies, subjects, and distances. Still, the specification tells us where Sigma has placed its priorities: wide-open correction, autofocus, professional controls, and a size that remains plausible for location portraiture.

F1.2 Is More Than a Number, but Not a Verdict

The move from f/1.4 to f/1.2 is a relatively small gain in light. Its creative value comes from the complete optical design, not the aperture marking alone. At 85mm and portrait distance, the shallower plane of focus can intensify separation. It can also make eyelashes sharp while an eye falls soft, so autofocus accuracy becomes part of the lens’s visual character rather than a convenience.

Bokeh describes the quality of out-of-focus rendering, not simply the quantity of blur. Diaphragm shape, aberration correction, foreground transitions, specular highlights, and subject distance all matter. Sigma’s 13 blades and stated effort to control axial chromatic aberration are therefore more relevant than an isolated promise of a softer background.

Early tests are encouraging. PetaPixel’s review reports strong detail at f/1.2, very minor longitudinal chromatic aberration, clean specular highlights, fast focusing, and a small amount of focus breathing. The reviewer also liked the slight softness of wide-open contrast and the way backlight could produce a warm veil. Those qualities sound more useful for portraits than a pursuit of clinical sharpness alone.

Digital Camera World’s independent review similarly found strong wide-open performance and smooth defocus. Its laboratory comparison put equivalent Canon and Nikon lenses slightly ahead at f/1.2 for sharpness, while the reviewer considered the real-world difference difficult to see. That is a helpful counterweight to Sigma’s own superlatives.

These reports are early, and neither substitutes for using the lens on the camera, with the people, distances, and light that define your own work. Portrait lenses are judged in transitions, missed moments, working distance, flare, skin detail, and how often their weight persuades you to leave them at home.

Sony’s Native 85mm Is F1.4, Not F1.2

There is no Sony-made FE 85mm f/1.2 in the current E-mount catalog. Sony’s native flagship at this focal length is the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II . That distinction matters. Sigma is not offering a cheaper version of an existing Sony 85mm f/1.2. It is supplying an autofocus aperture that Sony itself does not currently offer at 85mm.

PetaPixel describes the Sigma as the only current autofocus 85mm f/1.2 choice for Sony E-mount or L-Mount. DPReview adds that the less-established SongRaw 85mm f/1.2 announced for Sony and Nikon systems does not appear to be widely available. For a supported, readily purchasable native comparison, the Sony GM II is therefore the relevant first-party benchmark.

Sony’s official specifications and Sigma’s published figures make the tradeoff unusually clear:

  • Maximum aperture: Sigma f/1.2 compared with Sony f/1.4.
  • United States price: Sigma Corporation of America lists $1,599. Sony lists a $1,949.99 MSRP for the GM II and showed a $1,849.99 direct price when checked on September 11, 2026.
  • Weight: Sigma 905 grams compared with Sony 642 grams. The Sony is 263 grams lighter.
  • Optical construction: Sigma 17 elements in 12 groups compared with Sony 14 elements in 11 groups.
  • Diaphragm: Sigma 13 rounded blades compared with Sony 11 circular blades.
  • Minimum focus: Sigma 0.84 meter compared with Sony 0.85 meter with autofocus or 0.80 meter with manual focus.
  • Maximum magnification: Sigma 1:8.9, approximately 0.11x, compared with Sony 0.11x with autofocus or 0.12x with manual focus.
  • Filter size: Sigma 82 millimeters compared with Sony 77 millimeters.
  • Dimensions: Sigma 87.2 by 121.7 millimeters in E-mount compared with Sony 84.7 by 107.3 millimeters.
  • Autofocus: Sigma uses two HLA linear actuators compared with Sony’s two XD linear motors.
  • Mounts: Sigma offers Sony E-mount and L-Mount. Sony is E-mount only.

On United States list pricing, the Sigma is $350 less expensive while opening to f/1.2. The Sony answers with a much lighter and shorter body, first-party integration, support for high-speed continuous autofocus on compatible Alpha cameras, and Sony’s Breathing Compensation on compatible bodies. Neither lens has optical stabilization, so stabilization depends on the camera body.

This is not a simple value win for either side. Sigma asks whether f/1.2 rendering is worth another 263 grams and larger filters. Sony asks whether lower weight, tighter integration, and a mature native system are worth paying more for f/1.4.

Amazon showed no verified Sigma f/1.2 listing on September 11. The Sony 85mm F1.4 GM II on Amazon (paid link) and Sony Imaging Store (paid link) cover the available lens and Alpha range.

The Real Comparison Is With Sigma’s 85mm F1.4

When Fstoppers covered the development announcement in February, exact dimensions, weight, and price were still missing. The completed specification makes the choice clearer. This is not simply the familiar 85mm with one brighter aperture marking.

Sigma’s 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art weighs 625 grams in Sony E-mount, uses 77-millimeter filters, and measures 96.1 millimeters long. The new f/1.2 weighs 905 grams, uses 82-millimeter filters, and measures 121.7 millimeters in E-mount. The older lens remains the more portable tool by a wide margin.

That difference matters because a portrait session is not a specification sheet. A lighter lens is easier to keep ready while walking, directing, changing position, or working for hours. The f/1.2 earns its place only if its autofocus confidence and rendering create photographs that justify the extra 280 grams, larger filters, and higher cost.

Look at the transition around hair, shoulders, and clothing, not only distant lights. Test backlight, busy foliage, reflective city backgrounds, and movement. Count focus misses. Then ask which lens makes you want to continue photographing.

Why I Want to Photograph With It

This comparison is personal for me. The older Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN | Art is my favorite lens, and I used it to photograph the entire Melbourne Portraits Project . That 192-page book grew from more than 100 photoshoots across Melbourne over two years, moving through streets, architecture, natural light, nightlife, fashion, and close portraiture.

The f/1.4 worked because it balanced detail and softness without turning every location into anonymous blur. It gave me enough separation to make people present while leaving Melbourne visible in the frame. That history is why I am looking forward to getting my hands on the new Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG | Art.

I do not yet know whether f/1.2 will replace the older lens in my work. The most revealing question is not whether the new model produces more blur. It is whether its extra weight buys a more expressive transition from a person to a place, while keeping focus reliable enough for real portrait sessions. That is the test I want to make.
