A portrait can look dramatically different after a light moves a few inches. Changing the technology behind that light introduces a different set of questions. A new Fstoppers lesson by Alex Cooke , published September 5, offers a useful starting point for separating those decisions.

Cooke discusses a demonstration by Jiggie Alejandrino comparing continuous illumination and flash in a compact portrait space. The demonstration uses a shared lighting arrangement, adjusts exposure between modes and includes a tethered editing workflow. Its useful lesson is that the visible lighting pattern and the exposure needed to record it deserve separate attention.

Newsroom has not tested the equipment. The exercise below is an independently devised way to distinguish light placement, exposure and subject movement using your own setup. The lead photograph by Vitaly Gariev shows a separate studio session. It is illustrative context, not a frame from the demonstration or evidence of a lighting comparison.

Start with one question and one arrangement

This lesson is for photographers learning controlled portrait lighting. It assumes basic control of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. You need a camera with manual exposure, a stable light stand and a consenting adult portrait subject. To complete the comparison, you also need access to continuous illumination and flash, preferably through the same modifier. Borrowing compatible equipment is sufficient. This is a learning exercise, not a purchasing recommendation.

The objective is to separate lighting geometry from exposure and motion. Begin by deciding what you want to compare. Is it the transition from the lit cheek to the shaded cheek, the ability to hold an expression sharply, or the comfort of seeing the light before releasing the shutter? Write down that question before making frames. A comparison becomes difficult to interpret when every attractive difference is treated as proof of one technology's superiority.

Keep the subject, camera, background and modifier in marked positions. Use tape on the floor if the location permits it. Mark the subject's chair as well as the stand. A small rotation of the face changes the apparent nose shadow, so give a repeatable direction and allow comfortable breaks.

Make a geometry pair before an exposure judgment

Create two frames with the same framing and apparent brightness, one in each lighting mode. Adjust the controls needed for a usable exposure and record every change. Keep the aperture fixed for this first pair if your equipment permits it, so a depth-of-field difference does not distract from the lighting question. If a constraint forces you to change it, write that down beside the pair.

Compare the shadow boundary, catchlight position and background illumination. Do not start with skin smoothness or overall punch. Those impressions can be affected by processing and framing. Look at a specific feature, such as where the cheek shadow meets the mouth, and describe what you see before assigning a cause.

If the shadow appears to move, check the recorded setup and subject orientation. That observation alone cannot tell you that continuous light inherently creates one shape and flash another. The point of the fixed arrangement is to make alternative explanations easier to find, not to guarantee identical pictures.

Give movement its own comparison

Once the still portrait pair is complete, ask for one gentle, repeatable movement, such as turning the head between two comfortable positions. Make a short series in each mode. A single frame can capture an unusually still instant, so compare the series rather than choosing only the sharpest example.

Record the camera's exposure time, ISO and aperture, along with each light's output setting. Follow the camera and flash manuals for synchronization, and avoid treating a setting that worked on one camera as a universal recipe. Flash photography provides background terminology, but the operating limits of your equipment belong in its own documentation.

Describe the result narrowly. You might find that one setup yields more acceptably sharp frames for this movement in this room. That is useful practical evidence. It does not establish a general ranking across different lights, subjects, output levels or ambient conditions. Keep changing daylight and subject movement in the limitations attached to your notes.

Remove processing from the first decision

The source demonstration's tethered workflow is a reminder to check what the software contributes. Compare unretouched frames first. Use the same raw-processing profile, similar tonal treatment and a deliberate white-balance method. Temporarily disable automatic face adjustments or adaptive edits that could treat the two pictures differently.

This is not a rule against retouching. It is a way to avoid crediting a light for work done later by software. After making the initial comparison, apply your normal finishing process to a second copy of each image. You can then ask a separate production question: which captured file makes it easier to reach your intended result?

Keep both the original comparison and the finished pair. If you share them, label the exposure settings and meaningful processing differences. A viewer should be able to distinguish a capture decision from an editing decision without reconstructing the entire session.

Turn the test into a useful next session

Finish with a short record containing the question, fixed positions, changed settings, repeated frames and the remaining uncertainties. This becomes a repeatable comparison for the next portrait session. If the result is ambiguous, simplify one variable before adding more equipment. A less dramatic test can produce a more actionable answer.
