Depth Becomes an Editing Coordinate
DxO PhotoLab 10 introduces Depth Masks, which select parts of a photograph according to their estimated distance from the camera. That is a different editing instruction from selecting a sky, person, color, or bright region. The software is not only asking what an object is. It is building a depth map and asking where the object sits in the scene.
The distinction matters because photographic depth often crosses ordinary subject boundaries. A near railing, a person in the middle distance, and a far building may share similar colors or tones while needing different contrast, haze, or color treatment. A distance-aware mask can separate those planes without requiring the editor to trace every edge by hand.
DxO says the feature can target foreground, midground, and background. The useful original question is not whether that sounds more advanced than a conventional mask. It is whether distance is actually the reason an adjustment should differ. When it is, a Depth Mask can express the editing intention more directly.
The Best Use Is Usually Atmospheric, Not Corrective
The fresh DPReview announcement and PetaPixel hands-on report place Depth Masks beside expanded AI subject selection, color grading, dust removal, and refined U Point controls. That broader context helps separate two jobs. Subject masks are strong when the edit follows identity or shape. Depth masks are strong when the edit follows space.
Atmospheric perspective is the clearest example. Distant objects usually lose local contrast and saturation as air scatters light between the camera and subject. An editor might want to recover a little separation in the far plane without making the foreground brittle, or soften a background while keeping a near subject crisp. Distance is the governing variable in both choices.
This does not mean every landscape needs stronger depth separation. Increasing contrast in the distance can flatten the natural progression that makes a scene feel deep. Darkening every foreground can turn a subtle photograph into a stage set. The feature is most credible when it clarifies an existing spatial relationship rather than manufacturing one.
A Diagnostic Pass Reveals What the Map Understands
Depth estimation is an inference, not a measured survey of the scene. Before using it for a finished grade, the editor should test what the generated map believes.
- Apply an intentionally visible exposure or color change to one depth band.
- Move the near and far limits slowly through overlapping objects.
- Inspect fine boundaries such as hair, branches, railings, reflections, and translucent fabric.
- Check whether fog, mirrors, windows, and repeated patterns confuse the estimated distance.
- Reduce the adjustment to zero before judging the intended edit.
This temporary exaggeration is a diagnostic tool. It exposes transitions that a subtle final adjustment could hide. If the map places a reflection at the distance of the reflecting surface rather than the reflected subject, that may be technically understandable but visually wrong for the desired edit.
The same caution applies to portraits. PhotoLab 10 can select people and individual facial features, according to DxO. A face mask is normally the clearer tool for skin or eye adjustments. A depth selection becomes useful when several people occupy different planes, or when the environment needs treatment according to distance rather than identity.
Color Grading Makes the Spatial Decision More Consequential
PhotoLab 10 also adds independent color controls for shadows, midtones, and highlights. The combination creates a temptation to treat depth bands as separate scenes. A cool background and warm foreground can create separation quickly, but it can also break shared light.
The disciplined sequence is to stabilize global exposure and white balance first, decide whether the photograph's depth needs clarification, and then make one restrained spatial adjustment. Color should still respond to a plausible source. A distant wall does not become blue merely because it is far away, and a nearby object does not become warm merely because it is close.
Luminous Landscape's upgrade assessment treats the release as a collection of workflow changes rather than one isolated effect. That is the right frame. Depth Masks gain value when they reduce repetitive selection work and remain editable alongside U Point refinements, not when they become a preset look.
Distance Masks Should Remain Auditable
An efficient mask can also conceal why an image changed. Editors should name or group spatial adjustments according to their purpose, such as distant haze recovery, midground separation, or foreground restraint. That makes the edit understandable when revisited later and keeps a batch workflow from applying a scene-specific assumption too broadly.

A shortcut becomes more reliable when the photographer understands the visual relationship it replaces. Glow compresses highlight spread and local contrast decisions. PhotoLab 10 therefore changes more than the speed of masking. It adds distance to the vocabulary of local editing. That is useful when depth is genuinely the reason for a different treatment, when the generated map is inspected rather than trusted blindly, and when the final adjustment protects the photograph's existing light and atmosphere.
